We may think that our children are a small version of ourselves. Perhaps through them some aspect of ourselves can continue after death, or we may even urge them to achieve in life what we never achieved – in sport, public positions, media notability. We care and nurture them, and may leave all our wealth to them in our will, but are our children really ours?
We know from biological research that DNA, the life print of our physical form, is passed on to our children. But there are other factors at play. Traditional psychology knows that a child’s personality is significantly affected by the memories of the events during early childhood and culture. We have to look further than traditional psychology to find other factors that affect children. Amazingly, many children experience spontaneous past lives. Professor Ian Stevenson and his team at the University of Virginia have investigated and documented thousands of cases in which children’s reports of past lives have been subsequently verified. Stevenson also found that some of the events from past lives, particularly traumatic past life deaths, appeared to be carried over and affect the children in this life. This has also been confirmed by past life therapists who specialise in resolving these issues. These problems include insecurity from being abandoned, anger, depression, and unusual phobias such as fear of drowning, suffocation, fire, animals and knives. It also includes distressing dreams and inexplainable pains derived from past life battle injuries or beatings to the head, chest and limbs or throat problems from hanging.
If we accept that a spiritual part, the soul, travels from one life to another, this opens up the question of what happens between lives. Some of the early past life pioneers stumbled upon memories between past lives quite by accident. Following a past life regression and while in deep hypnosis, people experience what appear to be soul memories between lives. This has amassed an entirely new source of evidence about what happens following death. One of these pioneers, Dr. Michael Newton, worked with thousands of clients over 30 years. Working together with other therapists trained by him, their records of client’s experiences showed a remarkable consistency that cannot be sensibly dismissed as pure fantasy. Many ordinary people with little prior knowledge, and from all the world’s religions or non-religious backgrounds, reported the same basic experiences.
“If a soul wishes to experience grief it will choose parents who are going to die or a family that will have a loss of a loved one. If it wishes to experience powerlessness it will pick a weak physical body.”
One of these experiences involves the selection of the next life. This may include the type of body, parents and life situation. If a soul wishes to experience grief it will choose parents who are going to die or a family that will have a loss of a loved one. If it wishes to experience powerlessness it will pick a weak physical body. I’ll illustrate this with an extract from a client I’ll call Katja, who was at the point of choosing her current life with her spirit guide called Merlo following a past life as a Mexican peasant with more regard for his donkey than for people. She experienced the spirit world in semi human form;
I can feel an eagerness to come back into the physical life again.
So what do you do?
I’m leaving my group, saying goodbye. There’s no need to hug them. We feel so connected they know I care. There is a big white building, big walls, flat top, white, big doors, and inside there are stages.
Do you know what this building is?
It’s to see the bodies, or scenes. I have a glimpse into a life.
How are they presented to you?
I move round the stages. They are made of wood, not very big, like in a small theatre.
How do they work?
I’m not sure if I’m supposed to stay at the front or go round the back to see what’s there. I can see Merlo. He’s a little bit behind me, and when I look at him he’s telling me “You can decide this alone, you will know”.
So what do you do?
I see a girl in Japan. It’s more like a film than a theatre. She’s very tiny and fragile.
Is her life presented to you?
Her father is very strict and her mum dies early.
Why do you reject this option?
Maybe it’s too difficult because she’s so fragile. I see a second wife of the father and she’s very strict as well.
What’s the next option?
My life. My body. It will be unwanted by its mother as a child, but having a deep connection to the father. Having to learn a lot of empathy with the mother. A lot about betrayal. Betrayal of the father and of others. To betray and to be betrayed.
What attracts you to this life?
I can sense a very strong will connected with this body, and a flexible mind. I wouldn’t call this life easy, but there are more possibilities.
Are you shown any other possibilities?
Yes, a boy. His body looks very clumsy. I’m shown a very shy personality, very insecure, of this boy and of this man. It’s like it would maybe be in England or Ireland. The family are living a very simple life, very underprivileged, not much capacity to build on.
So why do you reject it?
The boy has a lot of learning difficulties. I thought I could influence more with the one before.
Are you shown any more options?
And do you discuss this with Merlo?
He knows. He agrees.
Katja had the choice of three options, one being the present life she is in, with the others still on the theme she was learning as a soul, but with varying degrees of difficulty. Note that it was Katja’s soul decision which parents and life situation she picked.
The soul is a tiny fragment of the creator and needs a living body to experience and grow. When it enters a foetus it brings with it helpful or unresolved past life emotions.
Returning to Katja’s regression:
What emotions do you take from past lives?
A tendency for violence, and to fight.
What percentage of these emotions do you bring down?
What’s the purpose of bringing this?
To protect me, like a kind of soldier consciousness. It’s not violence. It’s more of a force, a forward-moving force. It’s active and strategy-oriented, goal-oriented accompanied by very high alertness.
In this situation the past life emotions were to help Katja with a difficult life situation of betrayal that she faced. Sometimes, because of the freedom of choice by the parents, the situation with a newly selected foetus may change. An example is a stillbirth, so that what is delivered does not need a soul. Therefore the soul chooses to inhabit the fetus nearer its birth, remaining in close contact sometimes as early as conception. The soul enters into physical form like liquid totally absorbed by material. Katja explains that the merger will be eight months from conception.
Where do you go next?
It’s like a long tunnel. It’s getting darker.
Do you know what is happening to you?
The tunnel to this life.
So what happens at the end?
I can see a baby.
How old is this baby from the point of conception?
I take a moment, and watch it.
What part of the body do you enter?
Through the brain.
What does it feel like?
There’s a lot of energy there in the brain. I can’t help feeling a little bit trapped. I’m floating a little bit in and out.
When do you finally merge with the baby?
What does that feel like?
I can feel the difficulties my mother has with being pregnant, the disappointment. She feels she is too young and it’s the wrong man… she fell in love with another man.
How long does the merger take?
It happens over a period of time. I have to get used to the brain, it’s not an easy brain. It feels like my soul is much softer and quieter than the brain of this baby.
So what are we to make of this information that has been confirmed now by thousands of different people? Our children’s souls have moved from a spirit world of unconditional love and bliss and have chosen to learn by being in human form. They have picked us as parents and know what sort of life they will have and have chosen the emotions and situation to resolve, often from past lives. Sometimes they may pick us as parents not for their own learning but to teach us. Many early childhood deaths have been planned so that as parents we can work through the emotions of grief.
As parents we have an earthly responsibility to help children in their upbringing. Our spiritual responsibility is to respect that they have their own life plan that will be different from ours. In the spirit realms all souls see themselves as equals but with different experiences and knowledge. Perhaps we can remember this when we are in our human bodies. As the prophet Kahlil Gibran said, “Your children come through you but not from you, and though they are with you yet they do not belong to you.”
