“There is so much stress and anxiety around us, and our modern world feeds on all of us doing, having, striving, achieving, cramming more and more of everything into our daily life, regardless of the seasons and our corresponding levels of energy. The constant struggle to get more done is exhausting and energetically depleting. It is so easy to forget that we are just another organic living being, and as such, are not immune to the turning of the seasons.” Claire Heywood – SunYoga
Although the days are now growing longer as we move beyond the winter solstice, the solar energy is still weak, while lunar energy reigns supreme. Now is the perfect time to stay indoors in front of the fire feasting on nourishing and warming stews, pies and roasts. Embrace the cooler weather and long dark evenings and snuggle up in bed with a good book and a mug of hot chocolate. Take the opportunity to slow down, rest and meditate and refuse to be rushed or pressured. Light candles and burn incense. Visit the sauna or spa, take a bracing walk on the beach or enjoy the mountain air or ski season. Those who honour the energy of the season of death and decay will easily ward off illness, exhaustion and the winter blues. Think of winter as a time to release unwanted energy and possessions in preparation for the freshness of spring.
Saturn-Neptune – form out of chaos
Let’s face it – these last few years have been pretty crazy. From June 2012 to March 2015 we had all those Uranus-Pluto squares turning our worlds upside down and this year it’s been the Saturn-Neptune combo challenging our whole concept of normality.
The theme for 2016 has been to find a balance between certainty and possibility; between reality and fantasy. Saturn rules dry earth and Neptune deep water. When you mix water with earth you get mud, but that mud can be sculpted into new forms. Things you thought would last forever could be washed away, but dreams you never dared hope for may suddenly manifest, as routines and obligations are no longer set in stone.
One of the best uses of the Saturn-Neptune combination is to make a long-held dream manifest. Build your castle in the air and then put the foundations underneath it. Add more passion and kindness to your daily life or find new ways of giving back to others.
As both Saturn and Neptune are in the fluid mutable signs of Sagittarius and Pisces, progress may occur in a spontaneous or indirect manner. Enjoy the journey rather than focussing on the destination!
Cancer the crab – caring for home, family and community
From 21st June to 22nd July the sun travels through water sign Cancer, whose symbol is the crab, an instinctive creature dwelling in the watery depths in the safety of its shell. Cancerians are extremely sensitive and will retreat into their shell if feeling hurt or threatened. They love to mother and nurture others and have a strong attachment to home, family and community. At best Cancerians are in touch with their feelings and display kindness, affection, sympathy and compassion. They are highly emotional and usually adore food, often eating for comfort or inviting friends round for dinner. Traditions, rituals and family history are very important – home is where the heart is and they can often be found telling stories around the dinner table. But don’t be fooled by that motherly nature – Cancers are generally tenacious and strong-willed with strong psychic ability andthey know how to get their own way. If the kind, gentle approach doesn’t work, they will simply use a little emotional manipulation to turn the situation around – brooding is a favourite tactic.
In medical astrology, Cancer rules the stomach, breasts and solar plexus. When Cancers are out of balance they can suffer from moodiness, digestive upsets, water retention and breast problems. The Cancer colours are white, silver and pastel shades and women born under this sign usually love antique jewellery and items of a sentimental nature, such as old photographs. Cancer’s greatest lesson is to live in the present and to deal with mood swings and feelings of fear and insecurity. Happy birthday to all Cancerians – here’s wishing you a fantastic year ahead!
