The controversial president. Venus retrograde. Sun in Pisces.
Donald Trump – the controversial president
Love him or loathe him, President D J Trump is here to stay. So let’s take a quick look at what makes him tick.
America’s 45th president was born on 14th June, 1946, at 10.54am in Jamaica, NY, making him a Gemini, that clever, quick-witted, fast-talking sign ruled by communication planet Mercury. And boy, does he love the sound of his own voice, whether it’s spitting out snappy slogans and tactless tweets; insulting those who disagree with him; rousing his crowds of supporters; breaching international protocol or alienating entire sections of the community.
Trump was born with Leo rising, representing his personality and appearance – that famous mane of blond hair and ruddy orange complexion. Leo the king; Leo the showman; Leo the lion; powerful, dominant and ready to roar. The downside of that Leo personality is Trump’s arrogance, bluster and narcissism. The upside? The warmth, generosity and protectiveness that attracted millions of ‘forgotten’ Americans, seeking a strong leader to champion their cause.
Not only was Trump born with Leo on the horizon – Mars, god of war and aggression was rising as he entered the world. Trump is a mighty business warrior with a $3.7 billion fortune; he’s famous for his temper tantrums and he’s used to getting things done fast. Mars in Leo rising is a stellar combination for a world leader who wants to make America great again, but left unchecked, this combo could easily lead to power trips and reckless behaviour. Can Trump succeed as president in a world where cooperation and consultation are essential?
In a birth chart, the moon describes our emotional and instinctive nature. Trump’s moon is in fire sign Sagittarius, blessing him with an entrepreneurial, adventurous and optimistic outlook. Sagittarius is known for coarse behaviour and foot in mouth disease and Trump’s Twitter account provides the perfect platform for his spontaneous and often tactless outbursts. Sagittarius is also the sign of international affairs, yet Trump seems to have a blind spot in this area. He’s legislating to ban Muslims and send people back to their own countries, yet his mother is a Scottish migrant, his first wife was from the Czech Republic and his current wife from Slovenia. He talks of bringing manufacturing back to America and building a wall on the Mexican border, yet his business empire has interests in Panama, Istanbul, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey and Indonesia. So why the paradox?
Although Trump’s Sagittarian moon makes him internationally focussed, he has Venus and Saturn in traditional and family-oriented Cancer, meaning he is genuinely patriotic and wants to protect his homeland from what he sees as external threats to national security. The USA is a Cancer nation (founded on 4th July) and Trump’s promise to take special care of American citizens attracted millions of voters. But just days into his presidency, millions more were protesting on the street and uniting in opposition to his controversial legislation. Are these Democrat voters or could they be some of the 95 million Americans (42.1%) who chose not to vote at all? President Trump was born at a full moon eclipse, and eclipses are harbingers of change. He may end up uniting America in a way he never intended.
To thine own self be true and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man (Shakespeare, Hamlet)
Venus is famous as the goddess of love and beauty, but she also rules money, aesthetics, fashion, pleasure and sheer self-indulgence. Venus has been travelling through feisty, warrior-like fire sign Aries since early February, meaning she is less gracious and more impatient and demanding than usual. Normally she spends just one month in each zodiac sign, but in 2017, she will be in Aries for a full four months, pacing backwards and forwards until she’s worked out exactly what she wants and what she values. The most important part of this cycle stretches from 5th March to 16th April. Astrologers call this re-assessment period ‘Venus retrograde’ – a time when we too assess the value of the people and things in our lives and clear out the dead wood.
Now that might sound rather harsh, but Venus retrograde works in a subtle manner to show us what or whom we truly value. For example during the Venus retrograde period you may hear news of your ex and find out he’s still in love with you, or indeed about to have a baby with his new partner! Or you may stumble across an old entry in a diary that highlights the loyalty of a friend or reminds you how much you love dancing. Or perhaps you watch a film that exactly mirrors a situation you’re experiencing in real life or bump into a person you haven’t seen for years.
When Venus is retrograde, it’s impossible to hide or pretend, and others will clearly sense your true motives and feelings. In turn you will become aware of any problems, differences or unresolved issues in your own life… is that job, still a dream job or have you outgrown it? The upside of these epiphanies is that you often realise how much someone appreciates or cares for you, or become aware of passions and treasures long buried or forgotten.
The Venus retrograde period is one of discernment and evaluation as you assess key relationships, priorities and activities in your life and ask: ‘Am I following my heart? Do I still want this person/activity in my life?” The usual advice is not to act on this awareness until Venus starts moving forward again (after 16th April).
The Venus retrograde period is not a good time for new investments or financial/business activities as the value of a share, product or commodity may be over-valued. On the other hand, it’s an excellent time for renegotiating a loan or contract, or buying real estate, antiques and other second-hand goods where you know the true value of the item (even though the seller may not!)
Sun in Pisces – dreams and visions for the future
From 18th February to 20th March, the sun cruises through water sign Pisces, noted for her dreaminess, escapist nature and wild imagination. Piscean sensitivity picks up the subtle layers of meaning in life, providing instinctive understanding of situations and offering direct access to the collective unconscious through dreams and meditation. March is therefore the perfect time to focus on dreams and visions for the future while gently releasing the past.
Those born under the sign of Pisces are known for their versatility, kindness and compassion. Many excel as counsellors, healers, actors, artists and musicians; some are attracted to the fashion, beauty and movie industries, while others work with those on the fringe of society. At best Pisceans serve humanity and practise unconditional love. Negatively, they can be victims and martyrs, prone to self-sabotage and self-sacrifice. In medical astrology, Pisces rules the toes, feet and lymphatic system. When Pisceans are out of balance they can suffer from foot trouble, intestinal diseases and fluid build-up. Escapism through fantasy, drugs or alcohol is also common. The Piscean colours are sea green, purple and shades of blue. The greatest lesson for Pisces is to set boundaries and keep their feet on the ground!
