Tapping into healing

EFT is a simple energy technique to help you to let go of emotional, mental and physical issues – for good.


Have you heard of EFT? No, I’m not talking about EFTPOS, I’m talking about ‘Emotional Freedom Technique’ or ‘tapping’ as some people call it. It’s been on the radar since the late 90s but in recent years has been gathering momentum as a go-to self-help method.

Developed by Gary Craig (an NLP Master), EFT is a meridian-based form of energy psychology used to treat issues from stress and anxiety, to addictions, grief, abuse, trauma, financial strain, PTSD, relationships, and physical issues such as weight loss and chronic pain.Simply put, it’s an emotional version of acupuncture except without the needles. Instead we use our fingertips to tap on meridian points (channels of energy) on the face and upper body.The best part is you can do it on yourself – although more complex issues should be addressed with the help of a qualified practitioner.

It’s easy to dismiss this ‘weird tapping thing’ because it’s hard to understand how it can produce such rapid results. However there is hard scientific evidence to back it up. Over 60 studies of EFT have been published in peer-reviewed journals, it’s been subjected to 20 randomised control trials (the gold standard in testing), and 98% of these studies have shown it to be highly effective.

Essentially, when we’re tapping we’re re-programming the amygdala – the part of the brain that decides whether something is a threat and sends the body into fight or flight. In today’s world we are almost constantly in a state of fight or flight, whether in response to actual threats to our survival or ‘perceived’ threats such as deadlines, unhappy relationships, financial pressure and the like. Tapping signals to the amygdala that it is safe to relax. Sceptical? That’s fine, EFT works even if you don’t believe it!

EFT is also wonderful for eliminating limiting beliefs. You know the ones – “I’m unworthy/ fat / ugly / guilty / wrong / not good enough”. Think about where you are, who you’re with, what you earn. Your life situation is a direct mirror of the beliefs you hold about yourself and the world.

The great news is you can change that! EFT can empower you to let go of these beliefs as well as self-sabotaging behaviours so that you can create and enjoy the life that you deserve.

So how do you get started? Here is the ‘basic recipe’. For the purpose of this exercise we will use ‘stress’. However, you can tap on whatever you like, whether it be a headache, anxiety, or anything else you are struggling with at the moment. Don’t worry so much about the wording. As long as you tap and talk about the problem you will get benefit. The more specific you can get, the better.

1.     Think of an issue, for example: ‘This stress’. Rate the intensity of it out of 10.

2.     Create a set-up phrase: “Even though I have this ______ I love and accept myself” (or I’m safe/ I’m ok if this resonates more).  Repeat twice while tapping on the side of your hand.

3.     Then start tapping (with two fingers) 5-10 times on each point. It doesn’t matter which side you use:

Eyebrow: ‘All this stress’

Side of eye: ‘This stress I’m under’

Under eye: ‘I can’t cope’

Under nose: ‘I’m so stressed’

Chin: ‘All this stress’

Collarbone: ‘I’m so stressed’

Under arm: ‘So much stress’

Karate chop: ‘I can’t cope’

4.     Do about three rounds and then take a deep breath and rate the intensity again. Repeat until desired relief is achieved!
